Semrush for Small Business: The “DIY” Guide to Ranking on Page 1

by Becca | 22 Aug 2024 | Content & SEO

I get it—as a small business owner, you’re the CEO, the janitor, and the customer service rep all at once. 😵‍💫 Who has time for SEO? But here’s the secret: you don't need to be an expert to see results.

I hear it all the time: 'Becca, I’m just a small shop. I can’t compete with the giant companies that have million-dollar SEO budgets.' ✋ I am here to tell you that is a myth! You don't need a huge team; you just need the right tools and a little bit of hustle.

As a small business owner, you’re already wearing ten different hats. The last thing you want to do is add "SEO Expert" to your resume. 😵‍💫 But here’s the truth: if you want customers to find you, you can't ignore Google. The good news? You don't need an agency to see results.

Today, I’m sharing the exact steps I use to help small businesses use Semrush to "punch above their weight class" and win in their local market.

At The Home Business Challenge, I believe in being a practitioner, not just a theorist. That’s why I disclose that I am an affiliate for several tools mentioned in my guides. When you use my links, you’re helping support my work in finding the best "Survival" strategies for home businesses. I’m an Amazon Associate and an affiliate for brands I trust. I’ll always give you my honest take, regardless of the commission, because your trust is my most valuable asset.

📍 Step 1: Claim Your Spot on the Map

For a small business, showing up in the "Google Map Pack" is more important than almost anything else. If someone searches for "best guitar shop near me," you need to be in those top three results.

  • Listing Management: Semrush has a tool that automatically pushes your business info to every directory that matters (Google, Yelp, Facebook, etc.). It makes sure your name, address, and phone number are perfectly consistent everywhere—which Google loves!
  • The Reputation Win: You can monitor your reviews in one place. Promptly responding to a 5-star review isn't just polite; it's a signal to Google that your business is active and trustworthy.

For a small business, showing up in the Google Map Pack is often more valuable than being number one in the organic search results. Think about it: when someone is on their phone searching for a service "near me," they usually click on the map results before they ever scroll down to the traditional links.

If your business isn't there—or worse, if your address and phone number are wrong—you are literally handing those customers to your competitors. Semrush’s Listing Management tool acts like a digital megaphone, ensuring your business data is 100% accurate across every directory that matters, from Yelp to Facebook.

This step is also about building a "reputation engine." In a local market, trust is your most valuable currency. By using Semrush to monitor and respond to your Google Business Profile reviews, you’re proving to both customers and search engines that you are an active, reliable business.

Google rewards engagement; a profile that regularly receives and responds to 5-star reviews is much more likely to stay pinned to the top of the map. It’s the simplest way to build a professional image without spending a dime on traditional advertising.

🕵️‍♂️ Step 2: The "Secret Recipe" (Competitor Gap)

One of my favorite "scrappy" moves is the Keyword Gap tool. You don't have to guess what keywords to use; just look at what's working for the big shop across town.

  • Find the Gaps: Type in your website and two or three competitors. Semrush will show you the exact words they rank for that you don't.
  • The Strategy: Pick the keywords that have "Local Intent" (like your city name) and write a helpful blog post or service page around them. It's the fastest way to "steal" their traffic!

The biggest mistake small business owners make is trying to reinvent the wheel. You don't have to guess which keywords will bring in traffic; your competitors have already done the testing for you! The Keyword Gap tool is like having a "backstage pass" to their digital strategy. By comparing your site to a larger local competitor, you can see exactly which phrases are driving their success. This isn't just about "copying"; it’s about identifying the opportunities they’re monopolizing so you can step in and offer a better, more local alternative.

Once you find these gaps, you can create content that speaks directly to your local audience. If a big corporate shop is ranking for "guitar repairs," you can outshine them by creating a page for "certified guitar repairs in [Your City]." Small businesses have the advantage of being personal and specific. By targeting the exact keywords that are already working for others but adding your unique, local spin, you can "steal" high-value traffic and turn those seekers into your loyal customers.

🛠️ Step 3: The DIY Site Audit (Clean Your Windows)

Think of your website like a physical storefront. If the windows are dirty and the door is locked, people will walk away. An SEO Site Audit is just a "deep clean" for your website.

  • The Fix-It List: Semrush will give you a simple list of "Errors" and "Warnings."
  • Becca’s Tip: Don't get overwhelmed! Focus on the "Errors" first (like broken links or missing images). Fixing just a few of these can give your rankings a massive boost without needing to hire a developer.

Think of your website like your physical storefront. You wouldn't leave trash on the sidewalk or a "Closed" sign on the door during business hours, right? A technical SEO error—like a broken link or a page that takes ten seconds to load—is the digital version of a locked door. It frustrates your customers and tells Google that your site isn't a safe place to send traffic. The Semrush Site Audit is your "health checkup," finding those hidden issues that might be quietly tanking your rankings.

The beauty of this step for a DIYer is that you don't need to be a coder to make a big impact. Semrush prioritizes your issues by severity, so you can ignore the complex "tech talk" and just focus on the big red "Errors" first. Often, fixing something as simple as a missing image alt tag or a broken internal link can give your site a noticeable "boost" in the search results. It’s about taking pride in your digital home; when your site is clean, fast, and easy to navigate, Google is much more confident in recommending you to its users. 🥂✨

🚩 Becca’s "Home Business" Tip:

  • Start Small. You don't need to use every tool in Semrush on day one. Master the Map Pack and the Site Audit first.
  • Use the Free Trial. I always tell my friends to grab the free trial of Semrush and run an audit immediately. You’ll be shocked at how much you can fix in just one afternoon! 🥂✨

🎯 The Challenge:

Go to Semrush right now and run a Site Audit on your business website. Find one "Broken Link" and fix it. You just officially started your SEO journey!
