How to Build a Topical Map: Proving to Google You’re the Expert

by Becca | 22 Aug 2024 | SEO

Have you ever felt like your blog is just a random pile of posts? 📚 You write about one thing on Monday and something totally different on Friday, and Google is left scratching its head. You and your readers might be too. Haha

When you first start a blog, it’s tempting to write about anything and everything. But if you want to actually rank on Page 1, you need to prove to Google that you have Topical Authority. Essentially, Google wants to know: "Is this person just guessing, or are they the king (or queen!) of this topic?" 👑

A Topical Map is the blueprint that proves you’re the real deal. It’s not about having 1,000 posts; it’s about how those posts work together.

Today, I’m showing you how to create a Topical Map. Think of it as a GPS for your content—it tells Google exactly who you are and why you’re the expert they should be ranking at the top!

At The Home Business Challenge, I believe in being a practitioner, not just a theorist. That’s why I disclose that I am an affiliate for several tools mentioned in my guides. When you use my links, you’re helping support my work in finding the best "Survival" strategies for home businesses. I’m an Amazon Associate and an affiliate for brands I trust. I’ll always give you my honest take, regardless of the commission, because your trust is my most valuable asset.

🎡 The Hub and Spoke Strategy

The easiest way to think about a Topical Map is like a bicycle wheel:

  • The Hub: This is your massive, "Ultimate Guide" post. It’s broad, helpful, and covers the basics of your niche—a high-level resource that covers the basics of your niche in a broad way. If your Hub is "How to Start an SEO Business," it shouldn't get bogged down in every tiny detail, but it should mention all the important pieces.
  • The Spokes: These are your smaller, more specific posts. If your Hub is about "Starting a Side Hustle," a Spoke might be "How to Sell on eBay" or "The Best Thermal Printers for Home Business." The real magic happens here.
  • The Connections: Every Spoke should link back to the Hub, and the Hub should link out to every Spoke. This creates a "web" of authority that search engines love.

By breaking it up this way, you satisfy the person who wants the big picture and the person who needs the nitty-gritty details. Oh, and Google, by the way. 😉

The reason this method is so important for your SEO is Topical Authority. When you have a Hub connected to ten different Spokes, you’re signaling to Google that you aren't just "mentioning" a topic—you’re covering it from every possible angle.

Search engines want to send users to the most helpful, comprehensive source available. When Google sees that your "Hub" is supported by a whole network of specific, high-quality "Spoke" posts, it gains confidence in your expertise. This "web" of content makes it much harder for a competitor to outrank you with just a single, lonely blog post.

Finally, this structure creates a "Link Equity" machine. Every time you link a Spoke back to the Hub, you are passing "SEO juice" (ugh, I hate that word) to your most important page. This internal linking tells Google, "Hey, all these great posts are related, and they all point to this main resource as the ultimate authority."

Not only does this help your rankings, but it also keeps readers on your site longer. They might come in through a specific Spoke about "SEO Tools," but then they see a link to your "Ultimate Guide" Hub and stay to read three more articles. In the eyes of an SEO, that's a home run! 🥂✨

🛠️ How to Map Your Content in 3 Steps

Step 1: Pick Your "Kingdom"

Don't try to map your whole site at once. Pick one category you want to dominate. Maybe it's "Affiliate Marketing" or "Local SEO." This is your starting point.

Step 2: Find the "Missing Pieces"

Use a tool like AnswerThePublic or even just look at the "People Also Ask" section on Google. What are people actually confused about? Each of those questions is a new "Spoke" for your map.

Or if you want to level this up a bit. Use Semrush's Topic Research feature to create a topical map for you! This is a great way to get a lot of great content ideas for any topic you want to write about!

Step 3: Build the Internal Links

This is the part most people skip! Why? Because it's annoying! Haha. But so effective.

Once you write a new post, go back to your Hub post and add a link to it. Then, make sure your new post links back to the Hub. This "interlinking" is what tells Google, "All of this content is related and high-value."

🚩 Becca’s "Mapper" Tip:

You don't need fancy software. I build my topical maps in a simple Google Sheet. One column for the Hub, and a list beneath it for the Spokes. When a post is finished, I turn the text green. It’s simple, scrappy, and it works! 🥂✨

🎯 The Challenge:

Pick ONE topic on your blog today. Do you have a "Hub" post for it? If not, make that your goal for the week!
