Should You Pay for SEO (The Honest Truth About When to DIY vs. Hire a Pro)

by Becca | 14 Aug 2024 | SEO

Okay, let's have a little BFF real talk for a second. ☕️ Grab your coffee.

If you've been hanging out in the home business world for more than five minutes, you've probably seen enough emails from "SEO experts" promising you the #1 spot on Google by tomorrow afternoon (okay, maybe slightly exaggerated, but you get my point).

It's a bit overwhelming, it's expensive, and honestly, a lot of it sounds like a bunch of tech mumbo-jumbo.

So let's cut through the noise and talk through this so you can make the best decisions for yourself and your business.

Are SEO services actually worth your hard-earned cash, or is it just another expense you don't really need?

If you're tired of guessing and ready to know where to put your marketing dollars, pull up a chair. Let's break down the real ROI of professional SEO.

At The Home Business Challenge, I believe in being a practitioner, not just a theorist. That’s why I disclose that I am an affiliate for several tools mentioned in my guides. When you use my links, you’re helping support my work in finding the best "Survival" strategies for home businesses. I’m an Amazon Associate and an affiliate for brands I trust. I’ll always give you my honest take, regardless of the commission, because your trust is my most valuable asset.

Let's dive in

🕒 The "Time vs. Money" Struggle

In any side hustle, home business, or company, you have two main currencies: time and money. Usually, when you have plenty of one, you're short on the other!

The DIY Hustle

When I first started, I did everything myself. It was the best way to learn (but I also didn't have any money). I stayed up until 2 AM reading everything I could, taking every course I could, and trying everything I could to become an expert at SEO and building WordPress websites.

What I did have back then was time. I was out of work and felt like I was out of options so I dug in and put in the time to learn everything I could and do it all myself.

I'm grateful now that I had that time, even though it was very difficult. Because learning all of the nuances of SEO takes a very long time. Especially today with all of the complexities around AI and things changing so often.

If time is a luxury you have in your business, then DIY might be a great option!

The Professional Pivot

Paying for SEO isn't just about rankings; it's about buying your time back.

It's for the business owner who is ready to stop playing "tech support" and start focusing on the parts of their business they actually know and love.

The biggest thing an SEO service can provide isn't just the rankings - it's time. SEO is a slow-burn process that requires a lot of research, technical tweaking, and constant learning. Sometime you simply need a professional for that.

DIY vs. Professional SEO: Which Path is Yours?

Risk FactorModerate. Risk of accidentally using outdated or black hat tactics.Low. Pros use white hat methods to keep your site safe.

Why Good SEO Services Are Worth the Investment

1. They Know the "Traps"

Search engine algorithms change faster than I can update my favorite playlist (right now, is totally Lady Gaga).

A professional SEO team stays on top of these changes so you don't have to. They know how to avoid black-hat tricks that could get your site banned and focus on the white-hat strategies that build long-term value.

2. They See the "Big Picture"

When you're working on your own site, it's easy to get keyword tunnel vision.

A professional looks at your site's speed, your mobile experience, your backlink profile, your content strategy, and more, all at once. They make sure all the gears are turning together.

They also know keywords. And not the ones that just drive traffic, they know that good keywords drive conversions. They find the keywords that your competition is ignoring and the ones that bring people to your site who are actually ready to click, "Buy Now."

3. Data is Their Best Friend

Tools like Google Analytics and Semrush can be a little overwhelming.

SEO pros live in that data. They can tell you exactly which pages are making you money and which ones need a little TLC, making sure every marketing dollar you spend is actually working.

This data also helps them find and fix all of the mess that technical SEO can cause to a website that goes unnoticed - especially if your site is old!

An SEO service does the dirty work under the hood to make sure the search engines can actually read and reward your content.

When to Stay DIY (For Now)

Let’s be real—not every business needs a high-end SEO agency right away. You might want to keep it DIY if:

  • You’re just starting out: If your site is only a few months old, spending $2,000 a month on SEO might not be the best move. Focus on creating great content first!
  • You love the technical stuff: If you actually enjoy diving into Schema markup and keyword research, keep doing it! It’s a great skill to have.

When to Go Pro: 5 Signs It's Time to Hire an SEO Pro

Are you still on the fence? I get it! It's a big move. But if you find yourself nodding along to more than two of these, it’s a pretty clear sign that your business is outgrowing your DIY capacity.

  • 1. Your Traffic is "Flatlining" 📉 You’re posting consistently, your content is great, but your Google Analytics looks like a flat line. If you’ve hit a plateau and can’t seem to break through to that next level, you likely have a technical or strategic bottleneck that only a pro can spot.
  • 2. You’re Confused by Google Search Console 😵‍💫 If opening your Search Console or Google Analytics feels like trying to read ancient hieroglyphics, it’s time. You shouldn't have to spend your weekends watching YouTube tutorials just to understand your own data.
  • 3. You’re Keyword Guessing 🔍 Are you just picking topics that feel right? A pro moves you from guessing to knowing. They find the high-volume, low-competition keywords that are actually relevant to your bottom line, not just random vanity terms.
  • 4. You Don't Have a Technical "Doctor" 🩺 SEO isn't just words on a page; it’s what’s under the hood. If you don't know how to fix Core Web Vitals, Schema Markup, or Crawl Errors, you’re leaving money on the table. A pro acts as a mechanic for your website.
  • 5. You’re Trading Growth Time for Tech Time ⏳ This is the big one. If you’re spending 10 hours a week on SEO and 0 hours on growing your actual products or services, your business is suffering. When your to-do list is 90% tech and 10% vision, it’s time to delegate.

Don't feel guilty about hiring help! Even the best athletes in the world have coaches. Hiring an SEO pro isn't giving up on your DIY dreams—it's choosing to be the CEO of your business instead of the technician.

🚩 Red Flags: When to Run Away!

Not all SEO services, companies, or people are created equal. And this can be very tough to know and get right!

I think just about every single client I've ever had over the years had a similar horror story (or stories) about a previous agency or freelancer who burned them, made things worse, or simply wasted their time and money providing no results.

There are a lot of bad SEO's out there and it's hard to find the right one for you. So make sure you do a lot of vetting beforehand and ask lots of questions about what they plan on doing for you.

SEO red flags and warning signs

However, if an agency or consultant tells you any of these three things, grab your coffee and fun:

  • "We guarantee #1 rankings in 30 days!" (Total lie. Nobody owns Google.)
  • "We have a secret 'backdoor' trick." (This is Black Hat SEO and it will get your site banned.)
  • "We don't need to change your content." (SEO and content are married and in love. You can't have one without the other!)

🎯 The "Becca" Verdict: Is it Worth It?

Yes - but only if you're ready to scale!

If you're still in the "testing" phase of your business, keep it DIY for a bit. Learn the basics, find your voice, and get some runs on the board.

But if you're ready to move from a hobby to a high-earning business? Hiring a pro is the single best way to build a "moat" around your brand that your competitors can't cross. It's an investment in a 24/7 salesperson who never asks for a day off (that's what SEO results are, btw). 🙂

💖 My Challenge To You:

Take a look at your Google Search Console today. Are your impressions flat? Are you spending more than 5 hours a week trying to fix your site instead of growing it?

If the answer is yes, it might be time to stop messing around and bring in a pro. Your future self (and your bank account) will thank you!

Last tip: if you do decide to hire a pro - find an agency or consultant that loves what they do. Lazy SEO's are bad SEO's. Haha. What kept me going in the business for so long was the opportunities to connect with people and be a part of their growth and success. There's nothing better!

So make sure you find people like that to work with. <3
