Why I Almost Quit the Home Business World (And What Saved Me)

by Becca | 21 Feb 2026 | Affiliate Programs

I remember the exact moment I wanted to throw my laptop out the window and delete my entire digital existence.

I was sitting at my desk, looking at all the money that left my bank account to join this company and get to the higher tiers for "higher rewards." Literally two months later the founder of the company shut the doors and ran off with the money. I watched a lot of good people lose a lot of money and time. Me included!

I almost walked away from the entire home business industry forever. Granted that was a risky network marketing company. Looking back, there were signs it was sketchy and I should have ran the other direction. But I was sold a lot of hope and a lot of promise from a person I trusted. They didn't know this was about to happen to them either.

I was in a bad place. I spent all my money to go all in. And got burned. Bad.

If you’ve ever felt like the "dream" you were sold didn't turn out the way you thought or feet more like a trap than a business, this post is for you.

Today, I'm exposing the very bad, no good, red flags that some online companies use that made me want to quit the home business for good—and the one shift that changed everything.

At The Home Business Challenge, I believe in being a practitioner, not just a theorist. That’s why I disclose that I am an affiliate for several tools mentioned in my guides. When you use my links, you’re helping support my work in finding the best "Survival" strategies for home businesses. I’m an Amazon Associate and an affiliate for brands I trust. I’ll always give you my honest take, regardless of the commission, because your trust is my most valuable asset.

1. The "Team of Thousands" Fallacy

In the traditional model, they tell you that "freedom" comes from building a massive downline. But here’s the math they don't show you on the whiteboard: to make a full-time income, you often have to manage, motivate, and babysit thousands of people.

The Truth: You didn't start a home business to become a 24/7 HR manager. I realized I’d rather have a high-quality product or products to sell online than try to build a team of 2,000 people who need a pep talk every Monday morning.

And most of those companies are the sketchy ones. And the ones who shut their doors suddenly or change the commissions on you with no notice.

I couldn't deal with all of that any more.

2. The Hype, the Lies, and the Manipulation

"It’s easy!" "Anyone can do it!" "Just send this script to 50 strangers a day!"

I couldn't look in the mirror anymore knowing that the industry standard was built on "fake it 'til you make it." When the strategy requires you to lie about your lifestyle just to get a sale, it’s not a business—it’s a performance.

Also, I'm not a saleswoman. I hate selling to people. But what I do love is talking to people about something that I care about that brings value to myself and them! Like, honestly, one of my very favorite jobs was working in a camera shop. I wasn't good at selling, but I had a lot of fun talking shop. 🙂

The Shift: I decided to stop being a "performer" and start being a Signal. Honesty working online doesn't require hype; it requires being helpful. And that's what I care about most in this business.

3. The "Profits Over People" Leadership

We’ve all seen it. A company owner you thought was "one of us" makes a decision that benefits themselves or a board of directors while gutting the income of the stay-at-home moms who built the brand.

They change the comp plan, they go out of business, or they pivot in a way that drives your team away overnight.

The Survival Move: In a survival situation, you don't build your house on someone else's land. I learned that owning your own platform (your website and your list) is the only way to ensure no one can turn off your lights.

4. The "Complication" Ceiling

I used to see leaders teaching strategies so complex you needed a PhD in psychology and the stamina of a marathon runner just to see a $50 check.

If a business model isn’t duplicatable for a busy parent or someone working a 9-to-5, it’s not a solution—it’s a second job.

The Truth: Success shouldn't be a riddle. My goal shifted to teaching the good things and simple SEO—things that actually move the needle without requiring you to learn a thousand new gadgets.

5. The "Recruit and Drain" Philosophy

The most heartbreaking part of the "old way" was the constant upselling. Instead of helping someone succeed with what they already bought, the answer was always "buy the next level," "get the bigger pack," or "upgrade to VIP." It felt like draining people’s bank accounts rather than filling them.

I get sick every time I think about that company that shut its doors weeks after I spent thousands of dollars to get into their highest tier. And there was nothing I could do about it. All of my money was just gone.

The Shift: I realized that People-First Profit is the only way to sleep at night. I’d rather sell someone one tool that actually works than a hundred "upgrades" they don’t need. I'd also rather help someone succeed without ever getting a penny from them rather than not. Of course I have my motivations for success and financial freedom doing this work, but at the end of the day, success stories bring me much more joy than a sale or a commission does.

6. Decisions Based on Egos, Not Impact

I saw too many "leaders" making decisions based on what made them look good on stage at the next convention, completely ignoring how those changes affected the person struggling to pay their light bill. When "Profits over People" becomes the culture, it’s time to exit the building.

The Survival Move: I decided to build a pack, not a pyramid. In The Home Business Challenge, I make decisions based on what actually works for the person at the kitchen table, not the person on the stage.

What Kept Me From Giving Up

When I told you I almost walked away from this industry forever, I wasn't exaggerating. I was tired of the trap doors and the "Recruit and Drain" culture. But then I found a community that actually practices what I preach: The Home Business Academy (HBA).

The HBA was the difference-maker for me. It’s built by two guys, Paul and Mike, who—just like me—got fed up with companies changing the rules on them. They decided to build their own affiliate system (rather than a network marketing company) where:

  • The math is simple: They pay a massive 80% commission (no jumping through hoops to "qualify").
  • The foundation is solid: They haven't changed their compensation plan once in nearly a decade.
  • The mission is "People-First": They’ve provided over 400,000 meals to kids through Feed My Starving Children.

If you’re looking for a "Turnkey" system that actually respects your time and your soul, this is where I hang my hat. You don't need a massive team to be profitable here—just two referrals and your business is officially "in the green."

No hype, no trap doors—just a plan for real residual income.
