Pricing your work is one of the scariest parts of running an SEO business. Especially if you're just starting out! Charge too little, and you're working for pennies. Charge too much, and you lose the client.
When I first started venturing out on my own SEO journey, I was terrified to send an invoice. I didn't want to look too expensive, so it sometimes felt like I was working for free. Or at least doing too much with little return.
As an SEO specialist, expert, consultant, or whatever you want to call yourself, an SEO audit is probably the most valuable thing you can do for a client. Especially a lead who you're trying to turn to a client. The audit is the roadmap that shows them why they aren't making money and how to fix it. It shows them you know what you're talking about and know how to turn things around for them to make their investment in SEO worth it.
Today, I'm going to try to take the guesswork out of it for you. We're going to talk real numbers, real strategies, and how to price your SEO audits so you actually get paid what you're worth.
At The Home Business Challenge, I believe in being a practitioner, not just a theorist. That’s why I disclose that I am an affiliate for several tools mentioned in my guides. When you use my links, you’re helping support my work in finding the best "Survival" strategies for home businesses. I’m an Amazon Associate and an affiliate for brands I trust. I’ll always give you my honest take, regardless of the commission, because your trust is my most valuable asset.
🏗 Step 1: Evaluate the Project (Size Matters!)
You can't charge the same for a 5-page local plumber site as you do for a 500-page e-commerce store.
- The "Quick Scan" (Local Biz): Focus on the essentials. You can usually knock these out in a few hours using Semrush. Price range: $250 - $750.
- The "Deep Dive" (Small Business): This is where you look at site speed, content quality, and competitor rankings. This takes a few days. Price range: $1,000 - $2,500.
- The "Deep Sea Dive" (Enterprise): Thousands of pages and complex technical issues. This is a massive project. Price range: $5,000+.
📊 Step 2: Choose Your Pricing Model
There are three main ways to bill for an audit:
- Flat Fee (My Favorite): Simple and clear. You give them a price, they pay it, and you deliver the report. No surprises!
- Hourly Rate: Good if the project scope is "messy" and you aren't sure how long it will take. (Make sure you track your time!)
- Value-Based: If you’re auditing a site that makes $1M/year, your advice is worth way more than it is for a site making $1k/year. Price accordingly!
🛠 Step 3: What Are They Actually Paying For?
Don't just send a PDF and walk away. Make your audit feel like a premium experience:
- The Report: A clean, easy-to-read document with "Action Items."
- The Video Walkthrough: Send a 5-minute video explaining the most important fixes. (Clients LOVE this!)
- The Strategy Call: A 30-minute call to answer their questions and show them the next steps.
🚩 Becca’s "Don't Do This" Red Flags
- Don't charge too little: If you charge $50 for an audit, the client will assume it’s low quality. Value your expertise!
- Don't include "Everything": An audit is a list of problems. Fixing the problems is a separate service. Make that clear in your contract!
- Don't ignore the competition: If you don't tell them what their competitors are doing better, your audit is only half-finished.
What Should Be Included in an SEO Audit?
There's no right or wrong here either, but build your SEO audit packages to be the same every time if possible. This helps take the guesswork out and hopefully make it easier and easier each time you do it!
Here are a few ideas to get you going:
| Feature | Basic (The "Check-Up") | Standard (The "Roadmap") | Premium (The "Deep Dive") |
| Ideal For | Solopreneurs / Local Biz | Growing Small Businesses | E-commerce / Mid-Market |
| Technical Scan | Core Web Vitals & Errors | Full Site Crawl + Fix List | Advanced JavaScript/Schema |
| On-Page Analysis | Top 5 "Money" Pages | Top 20 Pages + Blog Audit | Site-wide Content Overhaul |
| Keyword Research | Primary Keyword Check | Competitor Gap Analysis | Full Topical Map Creation |
| Backlink Audit | Total Count & Spam Check | Quality vs. Quantity Review | Competitor Outreach Strategy |
| Competitor Insight | 1 Main Competitor | 3 Detailed Competitors | 5+ Competitor Full Strategy |

| Typical Price | $250 - $750 | $1,000 - $2,500 | $3,500 - $7,000+ |
Becca's Pro Tip: When you're just starting out, don't be afraid to offer the "Standard" audit at a "Basic" price for your first two or three clients just to get some testimonials. Once you have those, stick to your guns on the pricing!
Unless...
Should Your SEO Audits Be Free?

This is an important question. So far, we've been looking at how to charge for an audit, but what if you should actually be doing audits for free and using them as a lead magnet?
This really comes down to where you are in your business. And it might be a very simple choice for you...
If you're just starting out - reach out to local businesses and send them an audit for free. Create a video discussing the issues you found and how you can help them. You can either ask up front first, or just do it without asking! It's really up to you.
This is also a great way to get easy reviews! Even if they don't become clients now, they'll likely leave a glowing review for all of your time and interest in them.
If you need clients - you might want to offer free SEO audits to generate leads and interest in your business. Show people what you can do and you'll land some clients. The SEO audit is really your most valuable and powerful lead magnet.
If you have enough clients and not enough time - then it doesn't make too much sense to offer free SEO audits. You can charge a premium for your time and expertise at this point. Or, bring on an employee or two and teach them how to do the audits while scaling your business!
There really is no right or wrong answer here. But SEO audits are a powerful tool at your disposal. Use them wisely!
